Performing to Billionaires and Prisoners!

As an entertainer, it’s my job to connect with people from all walks of life. It doesn't matter their cultural backgrounds, what languages they speak, or their socio-economic status - through the power of magic, I connect with them to spark joy and wonder into their lives.

I’ve performed shows for a variety of demographics. In the past years, I had the opportunity to perform multiple magic shows at RJ Donovan, a correctional facility meant primarily for inmates with severe mental illness and developmental disabilities. The inmates were classified into one of three levels based on the severity of their prior offenses. I was initially weary and concerned about performing my shows in my usual fun and engaging style - I didn’t know how these new audiences of mine would respond. Nevertheless, I gave the show my all as usual. And the response… IT WAS GREAT! The inmates were amazed and shared laughs amongst themselves whenever I had comedy woven into the script. This was a humbling experience, to say the least. I was struck by the resilience and humanity of these individuals, despite the difficult circumstances they found themselves in.

In contrast to performing in a setting enclosed by fully grouted and reinforced concrete walls, I’ve performed inside the lavish and decorated wall of the ultra wealthy. One moment that I vividly remember was when I performed in the home of Yoshiaki Murakami, a Japanese billionaire. This show dynamic was unique in that he did not speak English, which made my job a lot harder. However, I performed with more reliance on my body language and expression to deliver the same effect. After I performed, Murakami’s reaction was initially filled with intense contemplation, only to be followed by a smile and a genuine reaction of awe. Whether it’s a group of inmates at a maximum-security prison or a room full of C-suite executives, the reactions are always the same - wide-eyed wonder and amazement. 

This is the true beauty of magic: the ability to connect with people, regardless of their background, to create memories and spark imaginations. It's a language that is universally understood and appreciated. For me, there is nothing more satisfying as a magician than being able to share that magic with as many people as possible.
